SMS Texting & Character Limits
A good rule of thumb when texting is, "When in doubt, character count!"
It’s crucial to be aware of the SMS texting guidelines within the system when developing SMS text templates, sending manual SMS messages, and integrating SMS texts into automation.
Q. Are there character limits when sending texts?
A. Yes. When creating texts, it's crucial to understand that the system identifies texts at 140 characters. Compiling a manual, automated, or template text containing 280 characters counts as two texts sent (two segments of 140 characters each).
Q. Do spaces count as Characters?
Yes, spaces are considered characters when counting the character count in a text; meaning that every space you type is counted as one character alongside letters, numbers, and punctuation.
Q. What about adding Emojis to the SMS text message?
A. Emojis are a different type of character in SMS texting, known as "utf-8 text." If you add Utf-8 text characters to a text, that text segment will allow up to 70 characters per segment (not 140 characters per segment.)
Emojis are often utilized in SMS texting. Incorporating emojis decreases the number of characters possible within the typical 160-character limit. It's wise to consider each emoji occupying the space of TWO standard characters in a text message.
